A statement from Solution Tree CEO, Jeffrey C. Jones
Bloomington, Ind. (June 10, 2020)—I want to make it clear that Solution Tree and its companies stand with African Americans and people of color around the world—including our students, educators, associates, authors, staff, and families. We are deeply concerned with the consistent presence of racism, violence, and discrimination against people of color in our society.
We recognize that sustained and systemic racism is a national and global crisis. We support the efforts being made to seek unity, equality, and respect for every member of our society. It is the only way we will survive and grow as a global community, and we have work to do.
The recent deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd, among others, are horrific and reprehensible. We at Solution Tree feel the extreme pain, frustration, and anger that many others are feeling in the world at this moment, and we support the peaceful protests that are bringing long-overdue focus and urgency to these underlying issues.
Solution Tree’s vision is “Transform Education Worldwide to Ensure Learning for All,” and we continue to support our authors’ and associates’ work with schools that strive to make our world rich with equality, integrity, and compassion for everyone. We believe that education can change the world.
Most sincerely,
Jeffrey C. Jones, CEO

Teacher Response to Feedback from Evaluators: What Feedback Characteristics Matter?
Trudy Cherasaro, Marc Brodersen, David Yanoski
Friday, March 3 - 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM: Session 7 Poster Session
During this session, researchers will present on a REL Central study that looks at teachers’ perceptions of feedback from evaluators and identifies characteristics of feedback that may influence their use of feedback. The study confirms that teachers’ perceptions of four characteristics influence their response to feedback: the usefulness of the feedback, the accuracy of the feedback, the credibility of the evaluator, and the resources to which they have access. State and district education leaders across the country may be able to use the findings not only to enhance evaluation systems and the feedback provided to teachers, but also to improve the way evaluators are trained.
Title 2: Formative Assessment Intervention Effects on Student Academic Achievement in the Elementary Grades
Mary Klute, Helen Apthorp
Friday, March 3 - 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM: Session 7 Poster Session
This session presents the results of a systematic review to examine the impacts of formative assessment on student achievement. Overall, formative assessment has a positive effect on student achievement. On average across studies, students who participated in formative assessment performed better on measures of academic achievement than those who did not. Formative assessment in math had larger effects, on average, than formative assessment in reading or writing. For math, both student-directed formative assessment and formative assessment directed by other agents, such as a teacher or a computer program, appear to be effective. For reading, other-directed formative assessment appears to be more effective than student-directed formative assessment.

How do school districts mentor new teachers?
This report provides a snapshot of school district policies for mentoring new teachers in five Regional Educational Laboratory Central states (Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota). State education agencies collected survey data from school districts on who provides mentoring, how time spent mentoring changes after the first year, whether mentors are required to observe mentees, whether mentors are required to receive training, whether districts provide stipends to mentors for their work, and what barriers districts identify to implementing mentoring programs. Respondents from nearly 1,000 school districts, including superintendents and other district administrative leaders, completed the survey during the 2013/14 school year.

Marzano Resources and the Re-Inventing Schools Coalition (RISC), a recognized leader in competency-based education, have announced that they have reached an agreement for Marzano Resources to acquire RISC.
Marzano Resources and RISC have worked together for the past 10 years to support school districts across the country. The acquisition formalizes a long-standing partnership and will strengthen both organizations, allowing Marzano Resources to provide an even wider range of tools and techniques to facilitate the implementation of competency-based education in schools.
“I am thrilled at the opportunity to take this relationship to the next level,” says Dr. Robert J. Marzano, CEO and cofounder of Marzano Resources. “The RISC model puts together all the critical components that we’ve known for years are important to school reform. What’s nice about it is, it has them all and it has them in a framework where they all interact and they are all very concrete. And the best part about it is that there are actually districts that have implemented the model that are demonstrating results in terms of student learning and student achievement. This is a pretty powerful model. It’s got some strong evidence that it works.”
RISC will continue to operate under the direction of Rick Schreiber, executive director and cofounder, with formal support from Marzano Resources.
“RISC and Marzano Resources have been long-term colleagues and supporters of each other’s missions,” said Schreiber. “Marzano Resources has championed us for years as well as acting as an inspiration for our work. We are excited to partner with Marzano Resources so we can accelerate our ability to reach 1,000 districts realizing their unique vision of excellence.”
About RISC
RISC is a national educational organization that supports schools and districts in their transition from a time-based to a performance-based system, which results in students realizing their highest learning potential. Marzano Resources has worked with St. Charles School District in Missouri for the past four years. Working with the K-12 staff, leadership teams, principals, and supervisors, Marzano Resources established an instructional framework based on The Art & Science of Teaching. We’ve worked with staff on Common Core State Standards, creating a highly engaged classroom, vocabulary, formative assessment, and standards-based grading.
Dr. Danielle Tormala, associate superintendent for the City of Saint Charles School District, shares a story of success at Lincoln Elementary:
“Lincoln Elementary is one of our highest poverty schools in our district where over 50% of their students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Approximately five years ago, Lincoln was one of our lowest performing schools. They were one of our first adopters with standards based grading, and now they are the highest performing elementary school in our district and one of the highest performing schools in the county. We are very proud of their hard work and accomplishments.
It is amazing to walk through the school and have conversations with the students about what they are learning. The students are very clear on what their goals are and how to improve. Standards based grading has definitely been a driving force behind the increased student achievement at Lincoln Elementary.”
