The Critical Concepts in Social Studies
This report summarizes the creation of the Critical Concepts in Social Studies. It details the 10-phase process for identifying measurement topics and creating proficiency scales (learning progressions) for K–5 social studies and 6–12 history, civics, economics, and geography. Measurement topic lists and vertical progression charts are provided in appendices A and B of the report.
The report also articulates guidelines for educators seeking to align the Critical Concepts in Social Studies to their local standards, assign proficiency scales to specific grade levels and courses, and customize scales for their local standards and students.
